“Nanny” and “babysitter” are used differently by different families and candidates. The title is less useful than a written description of the actual work.
Recurring care or occasional cover
A nanny role often involves a repeating schedule and ongoing responsibility for routines. Babysitting often means a defined period of supervision, such as one evening. Either role can be part-time, and neither title alone proves training, language ability or permission to perform other work.
Define what happens during the shift
List supervision, meals, bathing, school pickup, homework support, play, child-related tidying and bedtime. State what is outside the role. If general cleaning, driving or cooking for adults is required, discuss it as work with its own time and expectations.
Handover matters in both roles
Share contacts, allergies, routines, permitted outings, screen rules and emergency steps. Confirm arrival and finish times and how a late return is handled. For a first engagement, verify identity and relevant experience and agree any paid trial.
Compare pay only after hours and duties match. Wages are paid separately from any platform subscription or matching fee.
